Instead, it operates on a phenomenon called "delayed auditory feedback", wherein a microphone attached on the device picks up the speech and plays it back with a delay of 200 milliseconds. There will be an echo effect that causes the person's brain to become disoriented and it will shuts down the region that responsible for speech.
